alien signs!!

look what i discovered today when i went to take the grapes out of the fridge!

what are they?! alien signs? giant footprints?

here's a closer look:

clearer now?

it's a FIELD FULL OF SNOWANGELS!!

i wish i was there to see the person do it. i shall have my own field full of snowangels soon! and it'll be tall and not so tall snowangels! yay! bb come back and make snowangels with me!

other than that, the sky was beautiful when i was on my way to school this morning:

the white line is the product of one of those planes which are very very common here. you can see them throughout the day.

later that day when i was on the way home, the sky was still beautiful.

and there's the white stripe in the sky again. =)

weekend alone in sweden!

bb has gone to old trafford for the weekend to catch the man u match against portsmouth. so i'm left alone to my own devices for 3 days! what am i going to do! here's what..

SATURDAY:

after a yummy maggie mee breakfast, i set off for downtown.

it was a bright and sunny day,

and i missed my bus by 2 seconds and had to wait for 22 minutes.

while waiting for the bus, i realized that snow can turn really dirty.

i finally reached downtown only to realize that the banks are closed and i cannot pay my bills. bleah. stupid 5 day week.
so, i got myself some yummy pick and mix! i am so addicted to them!

thus, i began to roam the streets and the stores.

after looking at clothes in various stores and not buying any because i was too lazy to try them on, i went back to the donut shop i noticed last week and got myself some donuts. i ordered a hazelnut and a rose flavoured, but the guy ended up giving me a chocolate, a hazelnut and a rose flavoured and charged me for all three. i didn't want to hold up the queue by demanding he removed the chocolate. it's as if the gods wanted me to have more donuts! so why not! i promptly consumed the hazelnut (which is why there is no photo of it) which was delicious and kept the other two for later.

i continued to shop and shop and shop without buying anything! i had a bag, a fleece jacket and a men's scarf on my shopping list but i couldn't find anything that was nice and within budget. =(

i eventually found myself at the store i was at last week staring at the very nice red jacket which is now hanging on my closet door! in case anybody wanted to know, it's about 40 sgd. expensive but it's pretty and unique. hehe. girls and their excuses to buy stuff!

after my happy purchase, i went into another random store. this store had a huge basement selling lingerie! and the bras had cute little tags on them that told you what they were for. haha.

outside the store, there was a hot dog stand. hot dogs are like the only street food here.

it was then, i realized the the moon could be seen even in this very bright and sunny day!

i decided that i've had enough walking and shopping in my boots and many layers of clothes and made my way to the bus stop. on my way there, i saw this woman with a very cute and white and fluffy dog that looked like hot dog from archies comics. the huge white dog had pink ribbons in its fur! and so, i asked the lady if i could take a photo of them. how touristy of me.

walking up the street, i realized that the cathedral's steeple looked great against the very blue winter sky. so did the St.Lars church..i reached the bus stop only to be notified that the bus will be arriving 28 minutes later. so, i was touristy again and took a photo of the statue in stora torget(grand square). apparently, is a famous Statue of Folke Filbyter when he is seeking after his grand child. Folke Filbyter is a fairy person, nobody knows if he had exist or not. The name Filbyter means that he bit off the balls of foals. hahaha. the statue has been there since 1927.

with 26 more minutes to spare, i went to the supermarket near the bus stop and got myself the 2 for 22SEK biscuits and cakes! yay!

and with 10 more minutes to spare, i took one last photo downtown of the building near the bus stop. it's a nice change from the HDB flats and skyscrapers in Singapore.

and with that, i made my way back. having only spent half of my afternoon by then, i spent the other half chain watching sex and the city and eating nachos and chocolates. the cold makes me hungry. i can't help it! eventually, i decided nachos and chocolates werent the way to go and made myself a nice dinner of roasted frozen wedges and pita sandwiches, of which i only ate the filling and threw away most of the bread.

having filled my tummy with nice warm food, i made myself do something constructive instead of being a couch potato. i did the laundry! the laundry here is free and fast! the washing machine only takes 30 mins to wash a full load of 5kg! but the huge industrial sized dryer was in use so i had to use the pathetic small one which couldn't dry the clothes even after 1 hour. i discovered a really cool thing in the laundry "house". There's this room for you to hang clothes that cannot be put into the dryer and there is a fan that will blow hot air at it. It feels darn good to just stand in that room after coming in from the freezing cold. Haha. and since the socks werent dry, i made full use of the radiator!

after the laundry was done, i scrubbed the toilet bowl and the bath tub! took a shower in the sparkling clean bath tub, then continued being a couch potato till bedtime.

SUNDAY:

after having the chocolate doughnut and some biscuits for breakfast, i continued to watch sex and the city.

then, i dragged myself out of the room in the light snow to go to the supermarket at Rydcentrum. I got the ingredients for my egg tarts and came back to bake egg tarts!

they're ugly but don't taste too bad. i was craving for them and since this isn't Singapore where you can get egg tarts everywhere, i decided to make my own. it was actually quite easy but pressing the dough into the moulds was no fun. the recipe said that you could make 12 egg tarts with it, but i wound up with 31 egg tarts which took me 3 hours. bleah.

i offered 5 to the 3 indian guys who stayed in this corridor and they said it was good. thank god they havent tried those in the stores or they'd throw my ugly egg tarts away. but it was good to taste something from home.

and that's my weekend alone in sweden so far. a frozen dinner, more sex and the city, some homework later, this weekend will be over and bb will be back to entertain me, and you won't have to read more nonsense like that! yay!

luv, junli.

Some nice and interesting photos...

Just Love the houses here. Red painted wooden houses. Lovely :)
A view taken from me slacking @ a cafe in School
Snow Soccer Field...Nope no snow footballing by me this time round...wouldn't work I guess.
Taken using my camera phone...can't believe the crescent was captured!

This is one amazing thing...press it and will have the door open for you. Child's play? Not until you try to push or pull the doors here...

Hopefully I can take a video of it and show it to you all here.

That's all for now...sleeping time :)

From Singapore...Tham Tham Misses US!

Picture says a thousand words :)

Mr Tham Tham's room feels different because he misses us all =D LOL~
Sorry Tham Tham, I did it again!

free day!!

yay! i have wednesdays FREE! no school!! that is why i'm sitting in my room in the beautiful sunny -8 deg C weather, blogging!

a couple of things i have concluded in the past few snowy days.

1) snow is only fun when it's fresh and falling lightly.
2) snow is NOT fun when it coagulates into ice and makes the floor damn slippery
3) snow is lethal and can break windows
4) heavy snow getting into your face and eyes is no kidding
5) snow is beautiful to watch when you're sitting indoors.
haha.
here are a few interesting sights in linkoping university that you will never see in NUS.

1) A panel of 16 microwaves for people to heat up the lunch they have brought from home.

for the first time since my primary school days, i have made sandwiches and brought them to school and these microwaves are godsent! warm sandwiches are perfect for a cold winter day. i would still prefer my yummy bizad yong tau foo though. =(

2) rows and rows and rows of bicycles! there's gotta be a thousands of them!

we havent gotten our bikes so we're still walking to school everyday and it's damn far! it's like at least 2 km away and the cold doesn't make it any better. imagine walking to school at 745am in the freezing cold, trying not to slip and fall! wonderful wake up call.

3)beautiful scenery! houses with snowcovered roofs and lots of tall, naked trees.

at least NUS has a huge patch of secondary forests too..what's missing are the cute little houses. maybe those along the road to pgp could count?

4) huge frozen puddle in a snowcovered field.

when we first arrived, the puddle was still in its liquid form. somewhere like last friday i think, it looked frozen in a nice green field. on monday, it was still visible. yesterday, it was already snowed in. hah. perfect weather.

5) snow covered macdonalds just outside of school! beats the macdonalds at engin hands down aesthetic wise, but loses completely price wise. it's 10sgd for a nuggets meal over here and that's the cheapest meal i think. but there's some studen offer where you could get 1 free item if you buy a meal. i still like my 4.50sgd nuggets meal better.

6) more nature! beautifully red berries on the way out of school!

if my dad was here, i am 101% sure he would pluck a berry and attempt to eat it. it is that tempting! it's nice to have some colour in the otherwise somewhat greyish winter landscape.

before i forget, here's my italian friend from maths class, Luca!

he whips out his english-italian dictionary during maths class to figure out the notes. he's really hardworking and also a party animal who parties almost everynight i think. his eyes lights up at the sight of girls and he'll tell you that he was just looking at their very nice boots. haha. and he choked on a fisherman's friend during maths class and saw death approaching. yes. that's my italian friend who makes maths class so much more fun!

finally, no post would be complete without some food!

1) kangacow chocolate pudding that was quite yummy. i don't get why kangaroo + cow but who cares when it's yummy!2) the custard filled, sugar coated doughnuts that i'm absolutely addicted to. i've eaten at least 5 of them in the past week! i love my doughnuts! but why do they not have taka doughnut here!

3) junk food! huge packet of chips, huge bag of nachos, huge box of chocolate chip cookes, chocolate bars and more chocolate bars! wheey!

4) my first semlor! it's a traditional swedish food which is basically a bun with cream in it. it's not too bad but not something i'd crave for when i go home. i'll more likely crave for the cheap chocolates and doughnuts!

5) pyttipanna! another swedish food which is really tasty and easy to prepare. it's made of cubes of potato and ham and onions. you buy it frozen and fry it. it's that easy! it's really good.

6) our first bowl of maggie mee since we got here! it's a swedish brand and costs about 40 cents per packet and actually doesn't taste too bad. better than maggie at least. they do have nissin here but it's really expensive, like 1 dollar a packet.

7) finally, our wonderful pasta creation from last night. fresh button mushrooms fried with garlic and hotdogs in a creamy cheesy sauce on spaghetti and boiled carrots. so yummy that there was no leftovers even though i overestimated the amount of spaghetti!

alrights! that's all for now. time for some lunch, webtv and maths homework!

luv, Junli!

school has started! and so has the snow!

school had to start some day but the holiday still goes on! hah. school here is very much different from NUS. over here, classes are conducted in small group lectures in classrooms. most of the courses only have like 20 or less people in it so the lectures are very much like secondary school lessons where you can just stop the prof at any point in time to ask questions. It's better than NUS i feel..at least you have to listen. Also, their assessment methods are different. The thing that ultimately counts is the final exams. everything else is optional. but there are quizzes and assignments during the term which will contribue to your final exam marks. meaning it's like a bonus instead of a must. you could choose to forgo the bonuses and just work super hard for the final exams or just do the bonuses and just get 2 marks in the exams to pass it.

i'm doing nanotechnology, which is quite fun 'coz the lecturer is good and the topic is interesting, numerical methods which is basically matrices which sux but the lecturer is nice too and cryptology which is weird and more like a programming course. the guy to girl ratio is pretty much like that in NUS engin. i'm the only girl in my maths class and the crypto class has like 3 or 4 girls out of a class of 50 or 60. only the nano class is quite normal since it isn't very technical.

most of these classes are master courses and alot of the students are international students. i met a really funny italian guy in maths class along with a german and a belgium. there are 2 thai girls in my nano class who are really nice and amazed that i can speak a little little bit of thai to them. there's also an american guy, i think an aussie guy, bangladeshi, french, and some more i have yet to discover. my lab partner for crypto is a slovakian guy with long hair who parties everynight, just like the italian who drinks espresso at every break. it's really cool to meet people from all over the world. i'll post some photos of them soon.

school aside, we're coping pretty well here, cooking our own meals almost everyday since food here is super ex but the supermarket has some fresh and cheap food like button mushrooms and carrots and brocolli. i've eaten more pick and mix candy in this week than i have in the past few years. it's cheap and good!

shopping here is pretty good too. the clothes here are more classy looking and fashionable than those in singapore. and the prices are about the same or cheaper. the stuff in the stores look like a combination of zara, mango and topshop at giordano prices. haha..but the amount of clothes you gotta wear during winter makes it a turn off to try clothes.

and it has finally started snowing for real! it's really beautiful! and white. and cold. and fun! the snow transforms us into little kids rolling snowballs in the streets and throwing snow at each other. the feeling is indescribable! it's something that everyone looks forward to and it turns out better than what you have been expecting!

here are some photos of the past week !

random shots of the sky at sunrise and sunset

the linkoping cathedral that's quite famous. google it!

photos taken downtown. check out the cute little girl with the humongous dogs which are 4th and 10th fastest in sweden and the mr bean lights street!

the boy who has a serious case of snow craziness

snow snow snow! look at the snowballs and the cute bird foot prints in the snow!

snow covered surroundings! looks like we're in a snowglobe! finally, our meals. the hawaiian pizza with bananas was yummy! try it!

luv, Junli
